Dear Chairman / Club Secretary
Re: WREXHAM AFC S-O-S
As a lifelong fan of Wrexham FC and an active member of the Wrexham Supporters Trust, I am writing to enlist your help and support to raise awareness and funds in our fight to save the oldest football club in Wales.
I am sure you are aware of the precarious situation that our club is in… we are the first Football League club to go into administration AND be deducted 10 points, placing us in line for relegation to League 2. However I believe with the continued help and support of the Premiership and Football league clubs, and their supporters, we will survive administration and go on to see many more great seasons at the racecourse.
We recently held a Fans United day, with supporters from over 50 clubs attending the game wearing their club colours, doubling our average home attendance, and creating a carnival atmosphere. Supporters from all over the country were also urged to “Wear Red for Wrexham” and to stand for the first fifteen seconds of the game they were attending, in a mass show of solidarity.
Our next fund raising venture was aimed at showing our club manager Denis Smith, his players and management team that they have the support of all 92 Premier and Football League clubs, and raise much needed funds for the future survival of our club.
Each Premiership and Football League club was asked to donate a home shirt signed by both players and manager. We were bowled over by the fact that EVERY one of the 92 clubs donated a signed shirt. We are now about to auction these shirts as a unique collection to raise funds to enable the Supporters Trust to either help purchase the club, or help the administrator run the club until a buyer comes forward. The auction will take place at Sotheby’s, London on 18 May 2005. At present five of these shirts are with Southeby’s to be photographed for the sale catalogue.
On Sunday 10 April, Wrexham is playing in the final of the LDV Vans trophy against Southend United at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. We plan to parade all 92 shirts around the stadium, either before the game or during half time, to maximise our audience through the national media and press. At present we are awaiting confirmation from the Football League that we will be allowed to do this.
The Trust has also set up a premium rate phone number so that supporters from all over the country can make a small donation to the Trust. The calls are charged at £1.50, of which approximately £1.12 goes directly to the Trust funds. I would appreciate it if you could post this information on your websites or match day programmes. The legal requirement for advertising this premium rate number is:
Call 0904 043 5000
Calls from land-lines will cost £1.50, of which £1.12 will be donated to the WST's campaign to save Wrexham AFC and the Racecourse ground.
Call charges from mobile phones will vary, depending on your network provider.
Please ensure you have the bill-holders permission to call this number.
I would like to thank all the clubs and supporters that have had collections at their home games and donated the money to the Trust. If any other clubs feel that they may be able to help with collections at their next home game, please e-mail the WST Trust direct for any assistance you may need to www.wst.org
Finally, thank you in advance for your support, and for highlighting our current plight. We have currently 126 days left to save our beloved club, as of 21 st July 2005, Wrexham AFC as we know it today will be no more, as this is the day we have an eviction notice served upon us by our current owner, Mr A Hamilton.
Yours sincerely
Neil Williams
